The European Union, European space Agency, and the national Space Agencies of Germany, France and other European countries form a complex web of remote sensing organizations.  Most cooperate reasonably well; all of them compete for funding and authority.  The listings here note only the multi-lateral European organizations, so check individual countries for greater detail.
 

European Space Agency -- ESA
ERS-1 and ERS-2 (European Remote Sensing satellites) were launched by the European Space Agency in July 1991 and April 1995, respectively. This www site includes mission information, sample imagery and a directory of services. An on-line version of Earth Observation Quarterly is also available. Images accessible on-line include synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery, AVHRR imagery, infra-red imagery and ocean-sensing data, as well as examples of merged data. This site includes links to many national space agencies in Europe. ESA is located at the following addresses:

 BRAQUE is a windows-based interface to ESA's Information and Retrieval Service. The site permits full text searching of extensive libraries on all aspects of remote sensing, space sciences, etc.

The EU's principal center for development of remote sensing and GIS applications and research.

Global Environmental Locator Service (GELOS)
The G-7 ENRM project intends to provide a worldwide, centralized clearinghouse for environmental information  and promote cooperation among environmental institutions. Contributions of research data are welcome.

The GELOS library allows users to register, search, and access information within the GELOS virtual library as well as within other remotely held databases.
