Map Maker is a free, relatively simple
Geographic Information System (GIS) designed to allow non-expert users
to create and manipulate maps. Map Maker is suited to monitoring eco-systems,
planning urban infrastructure, monitoring primary health care statistics,
and illustrating any number of geographically based research topics. Map
Maker offers free GIS software for Windows. The software, manual and demo
files can be downloaded from the address http://www.ibmpcug.co.uk/~MapMaker.

Multi-Scale
Maps
Available on-line at http://www.c3.lanl.gov/"cjhamil/Browse/main.html
are multi-scale maps of Washington, D.C.; digital elevation models of western
United States; and San Francisco Bay Area digital orthophoto imagery. Sample
high resolution images of 1 meter per pixel resolution are available. This
address also includes access to some National Center for Supercomputing
Applications software for scientific modeling, analysis and visualization.
NCSA's Digital Gallery contains approximately 250 megabytes of images and
animation sequences. Software and documentation can be downloaded by anonymous

The Perry-Castaneda Library Map Collection

The National Mapping Program of the

for about 350,000 maps concerning almost any aspect of geographic and earth
science studies in the United States, as well as for aerial photography
and satellite imagery of the United States. The EROS Data Center has on-line
1:100,000 and 1:2,000,000 Digital Line Graph, land use/land cover, and

GPS Service for Geodynamics
This site is useful for researchers
who use the global positioning system (GPS) for studies in geodynamics.
IGS archives and distributes GPS observation data and GPS satellite tracking
station clock information. The project maintains a network of about 50
globally distributed permanent tracking stations. It also has Data Centers,
Analysis Centers and a Central Bureau for information distribution. The
bureau maintains Hot Links with allied organizations in Europe, Canada

PARC Map Viewer
This site includes the Xerox PARC Map
Viewer, which is an HTTP server that accepts requests for world or USA
maps, then returns an HTML document including an image of the requested
map. Each map image is created on demand from a geographic database. Map
areas can be selected through a clickable map of the world located at http://mapweb.parc.xerox.com/map.
Xerox also provides an FTP site that
users describe as a gold mine for maps, datasets, and for all kinds of
public domain geospatial data at ftp://

Harvard Design
Mapping
This site, http://www.hdm.com, is a
relatively comprehensive listing of worldwide GIS net sites including links
to many university home pages. HDM provides support for advanced technologies
such as pen-based field computers, remote sensing, and the Global Positioning
System (GPS).

Elevation Catalog
Bruce Gittings' DEC remains the most
complete single source of digital topographic elevation and related information
on the web. The catalog is located at http://www.geo.ed.uk/home/ded.html,

Digital Chart of the World
This is also known as the Vector Smart
Map (Vmap) Level 0. The digital map provides 1:1,000,000 scale vector
information worldwide with thematic layers for road and rail networks,
river systems, utilities (electric and gas pipelines), international boundaries,
etc. Elevation data is at 1000 foot intervals with some 500 and 250
supplements. Available on four CD-ROMs that traditionally have retailed
for about $200 USD from USGS Open FIle Section, Box 25286, Denver, CO
80255.
NIMA
Digital Terrain Elevation Data Level 1 (DTED1)
Digital topographic data compiled at
approximately 100 meter post spacing (2 arc seconds). DTED Level
1 is described as "basic medium resolution elevation data for all (U.S.)
military activities and systems" that require land form data. DTED1
data outside the United States is classified; 2 arc second data is nevertheless
widely available for the U.S. and most industrialized nations from a variety
of legitimate sources. DTED Level 1 is restricted to U.S. Department
of Defense and military contractors; but appeals for civilian access can
be made to:
