About the Author

  1. COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE OF CHILE IN IT: Chile's diversified economy and close trade ties with buyers and sellers in the US, Asia, Europe and South America provide for a competitive advantage within Latin America and other developing countries. The market for high technology and products which improve the existing telecommunications/technology infrastructure is considered to be extremely favorable. Through NAFTA and the WTO agreement it is anticipated that opportunities for further expansion will increase significantly, specifically within telecommunications, spurred by investment from foreign companies.
  2. STRONG IT AREAS: Within Latin America, Chile's experience software development targeted toward mining and forestry will provide of an advantage over other developing countries. With respect to general software/hardware development and production , it would be more beneficial for Chile to continue to exploit its relationships with larger multi-national firms from US, Europe, and Asia, focusing on joint venture development.
  3. WHY CHILE IS FAR BEHIND AND WHY IT WILL CONTINUE TO BE? Chile will need to continue to improve its infrastructure, specifically with respect to its roads, ports and waste management facilities in order to continue advancement and become a global key player in the 21st Century. Educational reforms will also need to continue in order to place Chile's educational system on par with other economically and socially advanced countries.
