EDUCATION

According to the Plan of Action Summit of the Americas, adopted by the Heads of State and Government of the Americas, a body of substantial initiatives has been developed which are "intended to promote the overall development of the countries of the Hemisphere and ensure access to and improve the equality of education deepen economic integration and free trade". 1 Members are dedicated to integrating the use of telecommunication technologies within education systems as well as encouraging proper training for teachers with respect to the use of these technologies.

STATISTICS

  1. LITERACY: Chile has one of the highest levels of literacy in Latin America. Approximately 95% of those age 15 and over can read and write. 2

  2. ENGLISH FLUENCY: Spanish remains the predominant language with English fluency extremely limited.

  3. EMIGRATION OF COMPUTER PROFESSIONALS: As the standard of living for professionals n Chile continues to improve, it is anticipated that there will be a marked increase in the number of IT professionals returning to Chile after attending schools in European and US, thus reversing the traditional "brain drain".
