  1. IS THERE A HIGH-TECH TECHNOPOLIS SIMILAR TO SILICON VALLEY?: Growth in the high-tech industries in Chile appears to be occurring primarily in the Capital city of Santiago. As Chile's largest city, and a population of 5.2 million, Santiago is home to major computer companies such as Sonda and U.S. computer manufacturer Dell Computers has selected Santiago for its South American sales operation base. The somewhat rugged terrain and unusual geography will most likely limit growth of high-tech industries outside of the major metropolitan areas. Other major metropolitan markets include Concepcion-Talcahuano, with a population of 840,000, and Vina del Mar-Valparaiso, with a population of 800,000. Although advanced by comparison to other Latin American countries, Chile's IT industry is still considered nascent when compared to other western nations. Thus, the development of IT and R&D parks is a concept that has yet to take foothold in Chile.
