About the Author

  1. HISTORICAL STIMULUS FOR IT GROWTH VERSUS CURRENT STIMULUS: Rapid economic growth in Chile is fueling the expanding market for Information Technology. Within the telecommunications sector, industry experts estimate a 25% growth between 1996-2001.1 Demand for computer systems, software and peripheral equipment continues to steadily increase, with many of these systems linked through telecommunications networks. Historically, however, there has been no significant stimulus for IT growth in Chile. Beginning in 1973, the military government began to sell off many of the state owned companies. The subsequent democratic governments since 1990 have continued to encourage and foster privatization, resulting in increased growth in the IT industry. 2
